It's News to You
BY PAUL FRISWOLD

The nightly news is all about entertainment, despite the serious stories of death tolls and vanishing honeybees read in gravely mellifluous intonations by well-coifed anchormen and -women coming to you live from New York studios. After all, if it wasn't entertainment, the news wouldn't be included in the Nielsen numbers. But if you want all that useless gravitas stripped from your news, leaving you with heaping helpings of entertainment, then you want The Howard Brinkley Report. This live "news" (wink) broadcast emanates from (and remains within the walls of) the Soulard Coffee Garden Café (910 Geyer Avenue; 314-241-1464 ) at 7:30 p.m. this evening. Your presenters are Howie Hirshfield and Chuck Brinkley, and they bring you the latest in news, sorta. Brinkley and Hirshfield work live, with field reports and "man-on-the-street" interviews, just like the big boys, but they also allow time for audience interaction, allowing you to become part of the news — only this time without the handcuffs and the blazer over your head. Admission to The Howard Brinkley Report is $5, which the Howard half of the team notes is "about eleven cents per laugh." See? Statistics. Facts. News. Entertainment.
